Tactical Loadout: What to Carry When Every Ounce Matters

June 26, 2026  /  By Miguel Zapien

Building a tactical loadout is about balancing capability with weight. Every item you carry should serve multiple purposes, and every ounce should be justified. Here is how to build a tactical loadout that works.

The Tier System

Experienced operators organize their gear in tiers. Tier one is what you carry on your person at all times. Tier two is your belt kit. Tier three is your pack. This system ensures that if you lose one tier, you still have essential gear.

Tier One: Everyday Carry

Your tier one should include a folding knife, a small flashlight, a lighter, and a tourniquet. These items fit in your pockets and go everywhere you go. The tourniquet is non-negotiable, carry it where you can reach it with one hand.

Tier Two: Belt Kit

Your belt carries your heavy-duty tools. A fixed-blade knife, multi-tool, pistol, extra magazines, and a larger flashlight. Keep medical supplies accessible. The CAT tourniquet and Israeli bandage should be within reach of both hands.

Tier Three: Pack

Your pack carries sustainment gear. Water, food, shelter, extra ammunition, and medical supplies. Keep the weight under 30% of your body weight. Organize items in stuff sacks by category for quick access.

Modularity is Key

Use MOLLE-compatible pouches and packs. This allows you to reconfigure your loadout based on the mission. Avoid permanent attachments, your needs will change and your gear should adapt.

Training Over Gear

The best gear is useless without training. Invest in professional instruction. Learn to use your tools under stress, in low light, and in adverse conditions. A $50 knife in skilled hands is more effective than a $500 knife in untrained ones.

Remember, the goal is not to carry everything, but to carry the right things. Build your loadout around your specific needs and train with it until it becomes an extension of your body.
