Building Your Emergency Preparedness Kit: A Complete Guide

June 26, 2026  /  By Miguel Zapien

An emergency preparedness kit, often called a bug-out bag or 72-hour kit, is your insurance policy against disaster. Whether facing natural disasters, civil unrest, or unexpected wilderness emergencies, having a well-stocked kit can mean the difference between comfort and catastrophe.

The Core Philosophy

Your kit should sustain you for at least 72 hours without external support. Focus on the survival priorities: water, shelter, fire, food, first aid, and communication.

Water and Hydration

Store at least one gallon of water per person per day. Include a water filter, purification tablets, and a metal container for boiling. The Sawyer Squeeze and LifeStraw are excellent lightweight options.

Food and Nutrition

Pack high-calorie, non-perishable foods. MREs, energy bars, jerky, and freeze-dried meals are all good choices. Aim for 2,000 calories per day minimum.

Shelter and Warmth

A lightweight tarp, emergency blanket, and sleeping bag can save your life. Pack fire-starting materials in waterproof containers, include at least three different methods.

First Aid

Go beyond basic bandages. Include trauma supplies, tourniquet, antiseptics, pain relievers, and any personal medications. Take a first aid course to know how to use them.

Tools and Navigation

A quality fixed-blade knife, multi-tool, compass, and map of your area are essential. Add paracord, duct tape, and a headlamp with extra batteries.

Communication

A hand-crank or solar emergency radio keeps you informed. Consider a GMRS or ham radio for two-way communication when cell networks are down.

Documents and Cash

Keep copies of important documents in a waterproof bag. Include identification, insurance policies, and emergency contacts. Store small bills and coins, as electronic payment systems may be unavailable.

Review and rotate your kit contents every six months. Expired food, dead batteries, and outdated documents can render your kit useless when you need it most.
